So you are interested in running to maybe gain a healthier perspective on your career, handle family emotional drama, or to cross train for a marathon and want to increase your distance. Where do you start?

The best place to start is by downloading a fitness app that can track your distance. On my iPhone I have a built in fitness app that reads my distance and time spent running.

I began my journey with running in middle school where I would run 3–5 miles per day or per meet and that was really challenging for me.

In college I took running more seriously and now as an adult I have polished my running stride and music playlist to run at my optimum.

How do you become a competitive runner that can run 10 miles a day? You can improve! This is the mindset you need. There is always room for improvement! Maybe this means drinking an energy drink before running or listening to Skrillex. Maybe it means not stretching or stretching. Maybe it means running in smaller increments, taking a 5 minute walk/break, and getting back to it. This can mean a lot of things to many different running styles.

One thing I try to work on in my run is running in increments of speed — if I can speed up on my run and tell myself I will sprint to the nearest tree then I will. If it means slowing down for a minute or two then I will.

Now that you have an idea of how to run consider your running app again. Track the total number of miles you run on your app. If you can make it to 8 miles successfully without too much effort — good. Then focus on adding on a few more miles and you have reached your goal.

The best time to run I have found is in the late afternoon — or if you have a work opportunity you can take a break at 2 pm.

If you are averaging 8 miles a day that is not bad and you can add on a few more miles to meet your goal.

How long does it take to run 10 miles? For me running 10 miles takes a little less than 2 hours. Is this marathon pace? To run a successful marathon and qualify for the Boston marathon runners need to run 26 miles in 3.5 hours as females and 3.0 hours as males.

If you are successfully able to run 10 miles in less than 2 hours awesome. You can then change your goal to running 15 miles and then 20 and then 26.

Once you are comfortably running 26 miles a day which may take 3–4 hours you are able to hone this skill and go pro! If you can run 26 miles a day comfortably consider participating in a Boston qualifying marathon and see this love for running take off!

Happy running!
